Tax Statements
Payment of taxes is the responsibility of the owner. Tax statements are usually mailed out within the first 2 weeks of November. If you own property in Hamilton County and do not receive your statement, please contact the County Treasurer's Office at (620) 384-5522. Taxes are due regardless of the fact that you may or may not have received a statement. Second half reminders are mailed within the first 2 weeks of April.
Real Estate Taxes
Real estate taxes are due December 20th and taxpayers have the option of paying half or the full amount at that time. After December 20th and until May 10th, the first half plus interest can be paid. If not paid by May 10th, the full tax amount plus interest must be paid. There is no longer the option of paying the first half after May 10th. If taxes are due and unpaid for three years the property is subject to tax foreclosure by the county and can be sold at tax sale/public auction.
Personal Property Taxes
As a taxpayer, you have the option of paying the first half of personal property taxes by December 20th. If the first half was paid by December 20th, the the second half is due by May 10th. If you don't pay the first half by December 20th, the full amount of personal property taxes (watercraft, 16/20, personal property, gas & oil/working & royalty) are due in full plus interest. Full unpaid personal property taxes are sent to the Sheriff for collection in March and unpaid gas and oil are sent to the gas and oil companies for collection. If you paid the first half but not the second, that delinquency will similarly be sent to the Sheriff, gas & oil companies in August. Once your personal property tax is deemed delinquent and has been sent to the Sheriff or gas/oil companies for collection, a stop will be put on all of your vehicles (so that you can't renew them) until these types of tax delinquencies have been paid in full. This is per K.S.A 8-173.
Tax Roll Corrections
All tax bill corrections are issued by the Hamilton County Appraiser and Clerk, which are then approved by the Board of County Commissioners. The County Treasurer's Office receives the information and issues a corrected tax bill. Reductions will be reflected on the second half payment if taxes are not paid in full. Fully paid taxes with a reduction will create an overage resulting in a refund.
If you have become delinquent on your taxes, there are some options for payments. Please call us at (620) 384-5522 to discuss these options, so we can get you back on track with your taxes.
